Behind the Brand

In an ever-evolving professional landscape, the transition from military service to civilian life can pose unique challenges for veterans seeking to embark on a second career. Recognizing the potential and resilience that veterans bring to the table, ABM, a renowned leader in facility management services, has dedicated itself to providing exceptional opportunities for these individuals.
ABM had the privilege of speaking with Robert Ortega, a former sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corps with specialized expertise in helicopter electronic countermeasures and a team member at ABM, to delve into how the company's values, initiatives and culture converge to support veterans in their career journeys.
How does ABM provide opportunities for veterans?
Due to ABM’s size and diverse service offerings, there are numerous opportunities for veterans. Whether a veteran has a deep technical background or a background in leading units of warfighters, there is a role at ABM. ABM has built the recruiting infrastructure to recognize and accommodate these diverse skill sets.
In what ways does ABM assist veterans in transitioning to a second career after their service?
ABM creates a welcoming environment that acknowledges the experiences and education of veterans, applying these attributes to how we conduct our business. Right from the start, ABM emphasizes that veterans are a critical part of the ABM family.
What challenges do veterans typically face when transitioning back into civilian life, and how does ABM help address these challenges?
Military members often operate with an always on mindset and a strong focus on mission accomplishment. Additionally, transitioning military members are leaving an environment with clearly defined standards, performance feedback, and clear expectations for success, often under demanding conditions. In the civilian sector, this management standard is sometimes loosely adhered to, and retention concerns might lower expectations due to a fear of losing talent. This management disparity can present challenges for veterans to navigate. Although veterans might be perceived as tough and inflexible, the opposite is true. ABM recognizes this and embraces the positive attributes veterans bring. ABM welcomes accountability, ongoing coaching with defined outcomes, and appreciates a mindset that embraces change. By elevating expectations for team members, we are building a culture that takes pride in our work, and clients will acknowledge this commitment, choosing ABM over competitors.
How does ABM's impact group for veterans contribute to forming a community and fostering a sense of belonging?
ABM functions as a community, and we should all aim to create a sense of belonging within this community. Establishing the Veteran’s Impact Group allows veterans to share their experiences within the ABM community, building an environment of understanding as it relates to diverse leadership and communication styles. This effort fosters teamwork that accelerates our ability to navigate a challenging business landscape.
How does ABM's commitment to supporting veterans reflect the company's values and mission?
ABM’s success behaviors and the values cultivated in the military often align. This alignment enables former servicemembers to adapt to ABM’s values, such as accountability, collaboration, results achievement, valuing differences, and nurturing a mission-focused culture that embraces teamwork and a sense of belonging.
